Bronze patinated in three colors

This superb bronze mantle garniture, patinated in three different colors, was probably made for the Escalier de Cristal in the 1880s. The set comprises a clock in the form of a miniature Indian temple and two decorative vases richly ornamented with bas-relief hunt scenes. The scene on the clock depicts a tiger hunt. The animal, who is pursued by several richly attired men wearing turbans, grabs on to the hind quarters of an elephant who seems to remain impassive. The two vases are decorated on their principal face: one represents a rhinoceros hunt in which the prey becomes the predator; the other depicts a lion hunt in which a man, shown from the back and dressed in the colonial manner, brandishes his rifle and shoots the colossal beast.

Thanks to the remarkable chasing of astonishing finesse and the high quality of the decorations, this work can be attributed to a great craftsman. Each scene is executed in deep relief with an abundance of detail that is indeed rare. The patination in three different tones of bronze is also exceptional: each element of the decor, each figure, each detail alternates between gilded bronze, silvered bronze and copper-colored bronze, which helps to make the different scenes easily decipherable.
